A senior MP will be lobbying for any conscience vote on changes to the alcohol laws to be limited to the drinking age.
Associate Minister of Health Peter Dunne, who spoke at an Alcohol Advisory Council conference in Auckland on Thursday, says he wants the conscience vote on a vast range of alcohol matters done away with.
Mr Dunne says the conscience vote should be limited to the age issue, and all other matters should be dealt with on a party vote basis.
The MP hopes this will spark some debate in other parties to think about better ways of handling law reforms.
The chief executive of the Hospitality Association, Bruce Robertson, says there'd be much better liquor legislation if people had to vote on party lines.
He says conscience votes create confusion and silly and often unenforceable law.
