The ACT Party says New Zealand must follow Australia and delay the introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme to avoid harm to the economy.
The scheme is due to take effect from July this year, but the Australian government is putting off its attempt to introduce emissions trading until 2013.
ACT is holding a series of public meetings to highlight why it thinks New Zealand should reject an emissions trading scheme.
MP John Boscawen says life will be very difficult for exporters if New Zealand pushes ahead on its own, jobs will be lost and the price of petrol and power will rise.
Mr Boscawen says the scheme will also only increase the economic gap between New Zealand and Australia.
