Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples describes the extra tax on tobacco as tough love.
Parliament increased the excise tax on tobacco by 24% on Wednesday night. Excise on cigarettes was increased by 10%.
Two other 10% increases will follow in January 2011 and January 2012.
Dr Sharples told Waatea News he knows many Maori addicts won't cut down, and the extra amount they spend on cigarettes could mean less food on the table for their children.
He said smoking reduction is a kaupapa the Maori Party is making its own.
