Govt to release preferred seabed, foreshore options

8:43 pm on 29 March 2010

The Government will reveal its preferences for a replacement for the law on the seabed and foreshore this week.

The repeal of the legislation is a key part of the confidence and supply deal between the National Party and the Maori Party.

Last year, a review of the Foreshore and Seabed Act recommended it should be repealed, and that customary title should represent property rights.

Prime Minister John Key says the Government's response, in the form of a discussion document, will be released later this week.

Mr Key says the Maori Party appears to be happy with the progress being made.

He says the Government still intends to introduce new legislation to Parliament by August.
