Maori language programme idea draws fire

A proposal to screen Maori language programmes on Channel 6 and Channel 7 has drawn fire from the Maori Broadcasting Funding Agency.

The Government is looking at making Television New Zealand's Channel 7, and possibly Channel 6, public service broadcasting entities.

That would release the other TVNZ channels to be totally commercial.

Appearing before Parliament's Maori affairs select committee on Wednesday, representatives of the Maori Broadcasting Funding Agency said they opposed such a move.

The agency's chairwoman, Jacqui Te Kani, said it paid commercial rates for its programmes to screen on TVNZ.
