Govt preparations for Rugby World Cup shambles - Labour

Labour says the Government's failure to secure agreement on redeveloping Queen's Wharf in Auckland in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup shows its handling of preparations is a shambles.

Auckland mayors on Friday rejected plans for a $100 million redevelopment, leaving uncertainty about how the space might be used.

Labour Party leader Phil Goff says the Prime Minister's idea for a party venue was ill thought out.

He says the plan was being rushed, without consideration for the long-term development of the waterfront.

Mr Goff says ratepayers would have been paying for what was turning into a white elephant if it had gone ahead.
