Clinton trip to be rescheduled 'sooner rather than later'

7:31 am on 15 January 2010

US Ambassador David Huebner says discussions are already underway to try to reschedule the visit of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Mrs Clinton was due to arrive in Auckland on Friday but has postponed her trip to the Pacific to coordinate US relief efforts in earthquake-devastated Haiti.

Mr Huebner says US President Barack Obama wants his top staff in Washington to help deal with the deepening humanitarian crisis.

He says everything is being done to try to reschedule the trip "sooner rather than later".

Before returning to Washington, Mrs Clinton told reporters in Hawaii the US has forged close working ties with the New Zealand Government in the past year and the US will continue deepening those ties.
