ANZUS future expected to be discussed during Clinton visit

A former New Zealand diplomat says the future of the ANZUS relationship between this country and the United States is sure to be addressed during the visit of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton later this week.

Mrs Clinton arrives in New Zealand on Friday, as part of a three nation trip to the Pacific.

There has been speculation that Mrs Clinton's visit may coincide with a lifting of a ban by the US on military exercises with New Zealand.

Senior fellow at Victoria University's Centre for Strategic Studies Terence O'Brien told Summer Report on Monday there was a certain logic in resuming joint military exercises.

However he said there were big questions about the terms of any deal and what the future might hold for the ANZUS military arrangement which existed between the US and New Zealand.
