AA advises softer approach on ACC entitlements

The Automobile Association is asking politicians to soften the approach being taken towards criminals' entitlements to ACC cover.

A parliamentary select committee is hearing public submissions on legislation that cuts a range of entitlements and extends the deadline for fully funding ACC to 2019.

At present someone convicted of murder, or who is in jail, cannot claim ACC, but the Government is seeking to toughen up the existing law to automatically exclude some criminals.

The AA believes the likes of convicted murderer Graeme Burton should not benefit from ACC.

But spokesperson Mark Stockdale says the proposed change goes too far. He used the recent case of Geoff Eades - the English grandfather who survived the Christchurch crash that killed three members of his family - to illustrate his point.

Earlier, under questioning by National MP Tau Henare, Anne Kelly from the Council of Christian Services told MPs that everyone had a right to be treated and covered by ACC, which was supposed to be universal.

Mr Henare said he hoped that one day she'd be on the side of somebody really, really hurt by someone who should be locked up.
