The Human Rights Commission has renewed its call for the Government to ratify the United Nations declaration on the rights of indigenous people.

The previous Government joined Australia, the United States and Canada in voting against the declaration.

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres says the Government has told the United Nations it is reconsidering New Zealand's stance on the declaration.

Waatea News reports the commission's 2009 report also includes a call for a review of constitutional arrangements to give greater effect to the Treaty of Waitangi.
