MPs vote down bill to make Maori New Year a holiday

A bill seeking to make the Maori New Year, Matariki, a public holiday has been narrowly voted down in Parliament.

The bill, in the name of the Maori Party MP Rahui Katene, would have established a public holiday in June.

The bill failed by 63 votes to 59, with National and ACT MPs voting against it.
