A Wellington lawyer has sent a report to the United Nations, criticising New Zealand's human rights record.
New Zealand is a signatory to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and is required to submit regular reports to the UN, detailing the country's human rights status.
However, non-government organisations are allowed to submit a shadow report, which may include criticism.
Tony Ellis co-authored the report, calling for the Government to repeal preventive detention laws and a section of the Bill of Rights that allows other Acts to prevail.
The report also raises concerns about the treatment of prisoners and calls for an Independent Prisons Inspectorate and the repeal of the Prisoners & Victims Claims Act and Extended Supervision Orders.
Mr Ellis says the report will be considered by the UN's Human Rights committee in Geneva in July.
