Maori Party to discuss newspaper item about Waitangi incident

6:00 am on 18 March 2009

The Maori Party is to discuss a newspaper column in which one of its MPs, Hone Harawira, explains his support for two men accused of assaulting the Prime Minister at Waitangi on 5 February.

Mr Harawira attended court with his nephews, John and Wikatana Popata, last week.

He has said he will seek a meeting with John Key over the issue, but a spokesperson for the Prime Minister says it's a matter for the courts.

He has also written a column in The Northland Age newspaper saying the accused men "aren't angels" and asks -- "who is?"

Party co-leader Tariana Turia says due process must be followed and the issue will be addressed this weekend.

She says the protocol is that MPs should not interfere in the process when a matter is before the court.
