Legislation aimed at reducing the availability and abuse of alcohol has passed its first vote in Parliament unanimously.
The Sale and Supply of Liquor and Liquor Enforcement Bill would allow councils to limit the number of alcohol outlets in an area, and stop them operating near community facilities such as schools.
The bill also prevents the sale of alcohol at grocery stores with a floor area smaller than 150 square metres, except in limited circumstances.
And it reduces the allowable blood-alcohol level to zero for drivers under the age of 20, who don't have a full driver's licence.
The bill was introduced by the previous Government and passed its first reading on Tuesday night without opposition.
