New words replace old at ministry

"Social justice" is out and "value for money" is in.

These phrases are part of a list of words that some officials at the Ministry of Health deem palatable or not to their new minister.

A Radio New Zealand political reporter says a table of 26 phrases is doing the rounds at the Ministry of Health.

The left column is titled "In" and the right, "Out".

"Out" words were in common usage under the Labour Government: phrases like public health, social change, inequalities and advocacy.

Since the change in Government, those words have been replaced with: primary health care, value for money, health information and clinical networks.

Green MP Sue Bradford considers some of the changes are dramatic and says she's appalled at the list.

Labour MP Ruth Dyson says people should be alarmed if the change in wording is to drive a change in thinking.

A spokesperson for the Minister of Health says he has no knowledge of the list.

In a statement, the ministry said the document had been prepared in good faith.
