Prime Minister John Key says the deposit guarantee scheme is working as it should.
Mascot Finance is the first company covered by the government scheme to go into receivership.
But the amount taxpayers will pay to help investors in the company may not be known for several months. Mascot owes about $70 million to 2557 investors.
Mr Key told Morning Report the scheme is working from the depositors' points of view, as New Zealanders will get their money back.
He said that's a much better position than before the scheme was introduced in October last year.
