New Treasury unit to advise on infrastructure

8:02 pm on 2 March 2009

A new unit within the Treasury will be established to manage the Government's infrastructure programme.

The Government announced in February that $500 million of infrastructure projects would be fast-tracked.

Minister of Infrastructure Bill English says the National Infrastructure Unit will improve the way public sector agencies manage their existing assets and lead to stronger forward planning.

Mr English says the unit will be drawn largely from existing Treasury resources, as well as staff seconded from other departments.

A National Infrastructure Advisory board, which includes private sector and local government representatives, will also be established.
