Boards of trustees told to act on abuse reports

Education Minister Anne Tolley says she will intervene if boards of trustees do not properly investigate reports of abuse in schools.

The board of trustees at Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate in Otara was dismissed on Thursday after a report from the Education Review office raised concerns about student safety.

The report said abuse by some teachers at the school included hitting, swearing at, and denigrating students, and the board failed to address the teacher misconduct.

Mrs Tolley says the ERO report also showed ongoing concerns about the governance of the board and student achievement.

Lack of compliance with the law and poor administration, such as missing board minutes, were also outlined in the report.
