Israel has jeopardised the security of its own people with an over-the-top reaction to Hamas rocket attacks, says Labour's foreign affairs spokesperson, Helen Clark.
Miss Clark says the loss of life and the toll of injury and trauma in Gaza are horrific.
She says the Hamas rocket attacks on Israel can never be condoned, but describes Israel's reaction as disproportionate.
Miss Clark says both Israel and Hamas should abandon their flawed strategies and resolve to work with the United Nations to get the peace process back on track.
Israeli air strikes on Gaza started on 26 December after Hamas ended a ceasefire with Israel on 19 December.
