Forum offers hope for resolving dispute with Fiji

The Foreign Affairs Minister hopes a meeting of Pacific Island Forum leaders this month will be pivotal in resolving matters with Fiji.

Murray McCully says there is no communication with Fiji officials at the moment, following the expulsion of New Zealand's acting High Commissioner in Suva. Caroline McDonald returned to Auckland on Sunday. She was declared persona non grata on 23 December.

New Zealand's previous High Commissioner, Michael Green, was also expelled in June 2007.

Mr McCully says leaders at this month's meeting plan to hold Fiji's interim Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama, accountable for not meeting his commitment to hold elections by March.

The Auckland-based Coalition for Democracy in Fiji says efforts should be made to get dialogue going now. Spokesperson Nik Naidu says Fiji might not turn up to the forum if talks do not continue in the meantime. He says the relationship between New Zealand and Fiji is too important to jeopardise.

Commodore Frank Bainimarama came to power in a coup in December 2006 and later appointed himself interim prime minister. It was the fourth coup in Fiji since 1987.
