Legislation for on-the-spot protection orders progresses

Police are a step closer to being able to issue on-the-spot protection orders, with the Domestic Violence Amendment Bill passing its first reading in Parliament.

There was unanimous political support for the legislation.

The government said protection orders are issued at present in the Family Court, and many people do not go through with the process because of the cost involved, or fear of repercussions.

Labour's justice spokesperson Lianne Dalziel said her party is supporting the bill, but she is disappointed it is not more comprehensive.
