Consumer Affairs Minister defends product recall system

8:31 pm on 7 December 2008

The Minister of Consumer Affairs is rejecting a Green MP's claim the country's product recall system needs an overhaul.

Sue Kedgely says briefing papers to the new Minister show a massive increase in product recalls worldwide between 2006 and 2007.

She says that shows New Zealand's tradition of passively waiting for complaints from the public before acting needs to be toughened.

But the Consumer Affairs Minister, Heather Roy, says New Zealand has a rapid response system to risky products.

She says the ministry believes it's served the country well, but concedes it needs regular reviews.
