The Green Party says there could be a repeat of the 1970s dawn raids on overstayers if a new Immigration bill is passed by Parliament.
A Parliamentary select committee has recommended the Bill be passed with some amendments. It is intended to update current legislation, which the government says is outdated and inflexible.
If classified information is to be used, the committee says a summary should be provided to the person concerned.
The Green Party says about 14 state departments will be able to define information as classified.
Green MP Keith Locke is also concerned at an extension of search powers given to immigration officers under the bill.
He say the power given to immigration officers to search homes without warrants, may see a repeat of the dawn raids.
Immigration Minister Clayton Cosgrove rejects that and says most political parties support the bill.
A Radio New Zealand political reporter says the bill has the support of most parties and looks set to pass into law when it returns to the House.
