The National Party has signalled that it wants to provide some state tenants with the chance to buy their homes if it gets into power.
The move was outlined on Tuesday at an affordable housing forum in Auckland.
The symposium, organised by the Australasian Housing Institute, spent the day discussing how decent, affordable and secure housing could be provided.
National housing spokesperson Phil Heatley says it has no desire to deplete state housing stock if it wins the election.
Mr Heatley told the forum one option was to use the profit from the sale of a state house to help buy or build another.
