The Labour Party leader says he has paid an outstanding bill to a freelance journalist, after National MP Steven Joyce raised the matter in the House.

National Business Review (NBR) columnist David Cohen said he met with Andrew Little during Labour's leadership contest.

His job was to talk to Mr Little then write a briefing about how he came across.

In a column in the NBR last Friday, he said, four months later, the invoice had not been paid, despite several emails and phone calls.

After question time today, Mr Little told reporters the bill had been paid.

"He sent his bill to a member of my campaign team. It sat on that person's desk and, as I understand it, flitted around between some others," he said.

"I received it last week and it has now been paid."

Mr Little denied it was Mr Joyce's question that prompted him to pay the bill.

He refused to say how much the invoice was for and what time he made the payment.
