Prior to the election the National Party said it would spend $100 million over the next four years on building cycleways in urban centres.

The National Land Transport Fund will also put $21 million towards the cycleways programme, and local government and community funds will contribute $6.3 million.

However, Mr Bridges said he wanted more from local government in the future, especially Auckland.

Mr Bridges said Auckland (which includes Auckland Council and community funds) would only contribute $1.1 million out of more than the $20 million to be spent this round on the city's cycleways.

He said the remaining $90 million in the Government's cycleways fund would be allocated later this year.
