Not enough scrutiny of sport scientists, MPs told

Drug Free Sport told MPs on Wednesday there has not been enough scrutiny of sport scientists in New Zealand.

An inquiry in Australia last year found widespread doping and illegal drug use among athletes there.

Drug Free Sport New Zealand Graeme Steel told a select committee most of that had been traced back to one particular sport scientist.

He said there's no evidence of an equivalent person operating here, but there hasn't been enough scrutiny of people in those jobs.

Mr Steel said Drug Free Sport has also beefed up its relationships with both the police and Customs following the Australian investigation.
