'Greater transparency' added to ETS

1:12 pm on 28 February 2014

The Government has announced changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme enabling buyers and sellers to trace where carbon units have come from and how they were generated.

Climate Change Minister Tim Groser says that greater transparency about how the units were generated will allow buyers to decide if one is worth more than another.

He says although a significant shift in the price of units is not expected, it is important that buyers have as much information as possible so they can decide whether they want to pay a premium.

Mr Groser says the changes will come into effect in April and the information will be listed in the New Zealand Emissions Unit Register.
