The poll puts support for National at 51 percent - compared with 45 percent in the same poll in October.

Support for the Labour Party has remained steady at 34 percent, but the Greens have dropped from 13 to 8 percent.

The Greens last scored that low in 2011.

Support for New Zealand First dipped from 3.9 percent to 3.1, meaning it would fail to make it into Parliament.

John Key remains the most preferred Prime Minister, steady at 43 percent, while Labour's David Cunliffe dipped from 12 to 10 percent.

The poll surveyed about 1000 people and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percent.
