Dunne against Electoral Commission appointment

2:54 pm on 11 December 2013

In an unusual move, United Future leader Peter Dunne has voted against the re-appointment of Sir Hugh Williams as president of the Electoral Commission.

Mr Dunne says he has no confidence in Sir Hugh or the commission's chief executive Robert Peden.

He lost respect for the Electoral Commission when it de-registered his party earlier in the year.

So when Justice Minister Judith Collins recommended to Parliament on Wednesday morning that Sir Hugh Williams' appointment to the commission be extended another three years, Mr Dunne was not a supporter.

But when the vote was taken, Mr Dunne was the only MP to say no to the appointment.

Labour MP Maryan Street said Mr Dunne's speech would go down as the whining death throes of a minor party.
