Finance Minister Bill English denies he wants to water down the regulatory powers of the Commerce Commission but says it's timely to review regulatory bodies to ensure there's certainty for investors.
The Government announced on Tuesday that it will review the Commerce Commission's powers to regulate the telecommunications and electricity industries.
The decision followed a ruling by the commission that Chorus must lower the price for access to its copper network.
Mr English told Morning Report the review does not target the Commerce Commission specifically, but was a health check on the government's overall regulatory structure.
He said the review predates the Chorus ruling by the commission, with a review of the regulations governing telecommunications already underway.
