Labour says an international deal reached over Iran's nuclear programme is the most significant step towards a more stable world in recent times.

Iran agreed on Sunday in Geneva to reduce its stockpiles of enriched uranium and open up its nuclear facilities for inspection, in return for about $US7 billion in sanctions relief.

The deal will last for six months while a permanent agreement is sought.

Labour disarmament spokesperson Maryan Street said the agreement is a massive breakthrough which should be welcomed by all nation states.
