Government MPs confident about prospects

Government MPs are confident about the National Party's election prospects next year and have dismissed suggestions that new Labour Party leader David Cunliffe poses a threat.

The National Party caucus met at Premier House in Wellington on Friday as the party marks its fifth anniversary in government since regaining power.

The meeting has been all about National discussing and developing new policies for 2014 and beyond.

It comes as seven MPs have already announced they are retiring, opening the way for rejuvenation of National's ranks.

Local Government Minister Chris Tremain, who is one of those retiring, says the Government is in good shape.

Environment Minister Amy Adams agrees, saying the economy is recovering well.

Finance Minister Bill English is also optimistic but says that, under MMP, elections are always close and National can't take anything for granted.
