Minster proposes coronial changes

12:52 pm on 17 October 2013

Courts Minister Chester Borrows is proposing that families should be able to ask for a full investigation in this country into the death of a New Zealander when that death occurs in a country which lacks a thorough coronial system.

The proposal is one of a number of changes he says will make families feel more involved in the coronial process.

Mr Borrows says there will be cases where the police and coroners here will need to make their own inquiries.

The proposed changes to the 2006 Coroners Act will be introduced to Parliament next year.
