MPs have been told a bill to ensure victims of violence get a say on where their offenders live, work or go needs to be modified.
Parliament's Law and Order select committee is considering legislation that would allow victims of violent crime to apply for non-contact orders when an offender is released from prison.
The proposed law would apply to offenders sentenced to five or more years in prison for violent and sexual crimes.
But a member of the justice advocacy group JustSpeak, Edon Hoppener, told MPs on Wednesday there's a risk of re-victimisation if the victim has to wait untll the sentence is served, before applying for the non-contact orders.
Mr Hoppener also says appeal rights for the orders need to be clarified.
