Prime Minister John Key says he does not expect the large Pacific Islands Forum's dialogue country partners, including the United States, China and India, will sign up to the Majuro Declaration on climate change.
Pacific leaders, meeting this week in the Marshall Islands, have endorsed the declaration in recognition of the threat climate change poses to many Pacific nations.
In it, the leaders pledge to take action to urgently reduce greenhouse gas pollution, to avert a crisis in the region.
The main focus at post-forum talks between several countries and organisations in Majuro, the Marshall Islands' capital, on Friday is climate change.
But Mr Key does not expect any of the larger partner countries to sign up to the declaration.
"Probably not but why they're here is to put their side of the equation on the table but also to hear what Pacifric leaders are saying. I mean to me it's their presence that's significant; not necessarily just the words."
