Labour has confirmed it will repeal the charter school legislation if it wins the next election.
The Government is expected to announce shortly the successful applicants for the first publicly-funded private schools.
Labour leader David Shearer said charter schools are an ideological experiment inflicted as the result of a dodgy deal between the ACT Party and National.
He said Labour has been working with groups in the education sector to draft a bill repealing recent Education Act changes allowing charter schools to be established.
The first charter schools are expected to begin operating at the start of next year.
