PM quiet on support for Williamson's mayoralty tilt

7:42 pm on 1 May 2013

The Prime Minister is refusing to be drawn on whether he would support government minister Maurice Williamson entering the Auckland mayoralty race.

Mr Williamson says he has had approaches from many people wanting him to challenge Len Brown for the mayoralty in October this year.

He says he is considering the idea, but has made no decision.

The National Party MP, who is a minister outside the Cabinet, has held the seat of Pakuranga since 1987.

Mr Key says he has spoken only briefly to Mr Williamson about the mayoralty.

He says the veteran MP has handled a wide range of portfolios and is a passionate Aucklander, so if he wants to enter the race he will.
