More than 700 allegations of quake-related fraud
The Earthquake Recovery Minister says there have been more than 700 allegations of fraud, relating to the rebuild in Canterbury.
Gerry Brownlee told Parliament 20 of those have been referred to the police for further investigation.
The fraud can include both false claims to private insurers and fraudulent invoices to the Earthquake Commission for work that hasn't been done.
Mr Brownlee told the House that through an 0800 number set up for people to report fraud, more than 730 allegations have been made.
Out of the 20 referred to the police, four have been successfully prosecuted.
Mr Brownlee says about $4 million has been saved through those fraud investigations.
The Serious Fraud Office is conducting two major investigations, involving both EQC and private insurers, related to the provision of services for repairs.
