President of Myanmar formally welcomed at Government House

5:40 pm on 14 March 2013

The president of Myanmar has been formally welcomed into New Zealand at Government House in Auckland.

Thein Sein accepted an invitation from Prime Minister John Key in November after Mr Key's visit to the South East Asian country last year.

In Myanmar, Mr Key gave his support for radical economic and political reforms.

Governor General Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae welcomed the president alongside more than 100 Navy and other defence personnel, who performed a 21 gun salute, and a haka.

President Sein and the Governor-General will give a speech at a State dinner on Thursday evening at Government House, following official talks between the two Governments.

The president will meet with representatives at the University of Auckland, dairy company Fonterra, and a dairy farm, as part of his four-day trip.

Mr Key is the first New Zealand Prime Minister to visit Myanmar, which was under military rule for nearly fifty years.
