PM dismisses protests on asset sales

4:08 pm on 16 July 2012

The Prime Minister has dismissed protests held at the weekend against Government plans to sell up to 49% of State energy companies.

John Key says the Government will proceed with the sale of shares in Mighty River Power, Genesis Energy, Meridian Energy and Solid Energy despite people getting out to protest.

Mr Key says it appears only a few thousand people marched in opposition to the sales.

He says in contrast National won one million votes at last year's election, which gives it the mandate to sell the shares.
