Bail laws are set to be tightened up under new legislation tabled in Parliament on Monday.
The Bail Amendment Bill seeks to make it harder for those accused of serious offences to get bail.
It introduces a reverse burden of proof in bail decisions for some serious offences, meaning defendants would be required to prove they should be released on bail.
It will also give police new powers to deal with defendants under 17 who breach bail conditions.
The Youth Court's powers will also be extended to deal with defendants arrested under the police's new powers.
