New legislation not needed for high risk offenders - Greens

The Green Party says there are already options for dealing with high risk offenders nearing the end of their prison term and it is not convinced that new legislation is needed.

The Government is proceeding with civil detention orders that could mean people assessed as being an imminent risk of serious sexual or violent re-offending will continue to be held in custody.

The Greens says extended supervision orders allow high risk offenders to be actively monitored for up to 10 years after they are released.

But the Government says that kind of order would not be as effective as keeping an offender in custody.
