The crew of a boat made entirely from plastic bottles, which has sailed from San Francisco is expecting to arrive in Sydney in a couple of weeks.
The Plastiki, made from around 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles, has sailed over 5,500 nautical miles since leaving San Francisco, and left Samoa last week, headed for New Caledonia and then Australia.
Expedition leader David de Rothschild says the trip has highlighted to him how big the problem plasitc bottles cause is.
"The photo degradation of the plastics, that make the plastics basically break down into tiny little pieces. When you're swimming underneath the Plastiki when you see that sort of stuff and see specks of plastics that are no bigger than a grain of sand floating out in the ocean you realise that it is really monumental task to stop it, to clean it up, and we have to stop it getting in the ocean."
David de Rothschild says it is impossible to tell how long it will take to arrive in Australia, because the weather in the area they are sailing through is so disturbed.
