Tonga's late king praised for conservation effort

The International Fund of Animal Welfare has paid tribute to Tonga's late King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, describing him as a visionary in whale and dolphin conservation.

The Fund's Asia Pacific director, Mick McIntyre, says the king was a truly great leader because he banned whaling in Tongan waters in 1978.

As a result, the whale population is slowly recovering and a thriving whale watching tourism industry is generating millions for Tonga's economy.

Mr McIntyre says his organisation is looking forward to commemorating the late King's memory, especially for his commitment to whale and dolphin protection in the Tonga and the Pacific region.
