WWF urges Pacific countries to save whales

8:08 pm on 21 June 2006

The WWF conservation group has called on Pacific Island governments to take a united position towards the protection of whale populations.

This comes as the International Whaling Commission meeting saw all six Pacific countries, including Solomon Islands, side with the pro-whaling bloc.

Commercial whaling has been banned since 1986 to enable populations of whales to recover following excessive hunting.

WWF says surveys show that a majority of people in Pacific countries oppose the resumption of commercial whaling.
