Far North mayor off to Canada to promote mining

Far North mayor Wayne Brown is going to Canada in March to promote Northland's mining potential.

Mr Brown is joining a deputation from Trade and Enterprise, GNS Science and New Zealand Petroleum and Minerals to the Prospectors and Developers conference in Toronto.

The mayor says the convention is a key time for deal-making in the industry and the New Zealand group will let them know that Northland is open for business.

Mr Brown says the cost of his trip will be split between four Northland councils and is a small outlay for potentially enormous returns.

The Institute of Economic Research says the value of Northland's mineral production could increase from $58 million a year to $350 million and generate more than 1000 new jobs.
