Graffiti has been removed from the gravestone of New Zealand's first Governor William Hobson, at the Symonds Street cemetery in Auckland.

Auckland Council says contractors have removed the words 'Lies' and 'Honour Tiriti'.

Captain Hobson's first task as Governor was the negotiation of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840.
