The Crown says a samurai swordsman was in control and desperate for fame on the night he fatally shot a man and attacked two women in 2003.
Closing submissions were made in the High Court at Auckland where Antonie Dixon, 40, is accused of murdering James Te Aute and seriously wounding two women.
Crown prosecutor Simon Moore has dismissed defence arguments of insanity, saying Mr Dixon may have been violent and paranoid, but he knew exactly what he was doing.
Mr Moore says the accused was on the drug P, and wanted to be the centre of attention in a dramatic police shoot-out.
He says his claims that he was directed by God surfaced months later when he feared going to prison.
