Canterbury Health Laboratories has become the first laboratory in the country to be able to screen for synthetic cannabis products such as Kronic.

Quality and business development manager Kevin Taylor says laboratory staff have developed a method to detect synthetic cannabinoids in urine.

He says it means companies using its workplace drug testing service will now be able to test for the synthetic drug and other substances, depending on a business' individual health and safety policies.

The Government banned Kronic in August 2011 after emergency departments around the country reported they were treating increasing numbers of people with side effects from smoking the product.
